The Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines Scholarship Program

The purpose of the Ninety-Nines organization is to promote women pilots and to support them in reaching their aviation goals.  Our international membership numbers over 6,500 women pilots, including astronauts, military pilots, professional airline and corporate pilots, flight instructors, volunteer and recreational pilots.

 

The Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines, chartered December 1, 1949, strives to promote and strengthen the chapter by reaching out to women pilots, from student to professional in the state of Arizona to introduce them to The Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines.  We strive to encourage engagement and involvement in local aviation communities to continue on with the mission of promoting and supporting women pilots.

 

Each year The Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines offers up to two $2,000 scholarships (depending on the available funds in the scholarship fund) to women in Arizona.  The scholarships are to be used by the recipients to assist in obtaining a private pilot certificate, sport pilot certificate or for an advanced rating or training to further their pursuit in aviation.  Applications must be submitted by the application deadline, June 15th of each respective year.  Scholarship winners will be announced subsequently on September 15th of the respective year.

 

Applicant Criteria:

      Female U.S. citizens and residents of the state of Arizona

      At least 17 years of age

      Proficient in English

      Agree to complete certificate or training course within one year from receipt of the scholarship award notification

 

Award Criteria:     

Applications will be judged impartially by three judges.  The judges shall be qualified pilots but will not be members of our chapter.  The judges will consider applicants based on the following criteria:

      Applicant’s commitment to aviation

      Strength of the Personal Essay

      Financial need

      Ability to achieve goals

      Applicants current or planned involvement in the aviation community and the Ninety-Nines

      Recommendation letters

      Personal interview (if asked)

      Other scholarships previously received to fund aviation training

 


Scholarship Administration:

Please note: The $2,000 scholarship will be disbursed in increments and the applicant will have to initially pay for the training.  The scholarship is designed to reimburse part of the training costs.

 

Each $2,000 scholarship will be paid in increments either to the: applicant/winner, flight instructor or the flight training facility in accordance with the following completed goals:

 

Private Pilot or Light Sport Pilot Certificate Scholarship:

      $500 following passed written exam

      $500 following successful solo

      $500 following completion of long cross country (if required) if not $500 will be paid following the completion of the flight hours required to complete the training

      $500 following successful checkride

 

Advanced rating or training:

      $500 following passed written exam (if required), if not $500 will be paid following the completion of the flight hours required to complete the training

      $1,000 following completion of the flight hours required to complete the training

      $500 following successful checkride or successful course completion

 

Application Instructions:

On or prior to the application deadline of June 15th of each year:  In person bring the completed application form, and copies of the items listed below to a Phoenix Chapter of Ninety-Nines monthly meeting  (usually held on the second Wednesday of each month) at 7:00 pm at Swift Aviation, 2710 E Old Tower Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85034 (located on the south side of Sky Harbor Airport).  Alternately scan the completed application form and all required copies and submit via email on or prior to the deadline to:  PHX99scholarship@gmail.com

 

Applicants for Private/Sport Pilot Certificates are required to have accomplished either their first solo or the written exam prior to submitting an application. Applicants must provide the following copies in addition to their completed application form:

 

Checklist:

      Completed application form

      Copy of Third Class medical or equivalent

      Copies of logbook showing proof of first solo flight accomplished and or copy of written exam results

      Two letters of recommendation: one from someone familiar with applicant’s flying ability.

      Statement of financial need or budget anticipating expenses for completion of training.  See Financial Statement Guidelines

      Personal essay of at least 500 words but no longer than 1 page (one-sided).  See Applicant Personal Essay Guidelines

 


 

Applicants for Advanced Ratings or Training must provide the following copies in addition to their completed application form:

 

Checklist:

      Completed application form

      Copy of current medical

      Copies of both sides of pilot certificate

      Copies of logbook showing flight hours accrued for the rating sought and number of hours flown in the past 90 days

      Two letters of recommendation: one from someone familiar with applicants flying ability

      Statement of financial need or budget anticipating expenses for completion of training, See Financial Statement Guidelines

Scholarship Terms:

      The scholarships will be paid directly to the flight school, independent flight instructor conducting the training, or the student pilot upon receipt of sufficient proof, such as: copies of written test results, copies of logbook entries signed by certified flight instructor, or copies of receipts for fuel/aircraft rental for hours flown.

      Recipients who successfully complete their training will receive a one-year’s membership in the Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines.

      Any unused monies will revert back to the Phoenix Chapter of the Ninety-Nines Scholarship Fund.

      Application deadline is June 15th each year.  Application must be received either in-person at a monthly meeting prior to June 15th or received via email at PHX99scholarship@gmail.com on or prior to June 15th. 

      Scholarship winners will be announced on September 15th of the same year and training must be completed by September 15th of the following year.
